Root Canal Therapy

For many people, visiting the dentist can be an anxiety-filled trip, especially when they learn they need root canal therapy.

This general dentistry procedure, unfortunately, has been linked to pain and multiple visits to the dentist, but that is not the case at Court Square Dentistry. Our Long Island City dental office has made every effort to create a stress-free environment for our patients, including root canal therapy that is virtually pain-free and completed in one visit.

Root canals have traditionally been an in-depth dental treatment that involved removing the interior portion of the tooth, then placing a crown over the remaining structure. Technology has helped make this process simpler and no more painful than removing a cavity.

At Court Square Dentistry, we offer a few different services to make this procedure even quicker and less painful. We provide DentalVibe painless injections to begin the process and have One-Visit-Crowns (OVC) to ensure the treatment can be completed in one day at our office.

Root Canals Offer Pain Relief for Infected Teeth

Why do root canals get equated with pain? Because the reason for the treatment is often painful. In fact, the toothache that usually brings you to the dentist is far more uncomfortable than the root canal itself. With today’s modern dentistry and local anesthetic, a root canal is no worse than getting a run-of-the-mill filling.

Root canal therapy is used to save an infected or broken tooth that may otherwise need to be extracted. If an infection or trauma has reached the inner nerve root, this can be very painful until we can resolve the problem.

The Root Canal Procedure

Root canals remove the nerve root and any infected tooth pulp, resolving the source of the pain. This is done by drilling a tiny hole in the affected tooth after you have been fully numbed. Dr. Mapes will completely clean the area, rinse it thoroughly with an antibiotic, then seal it.

The remaining tooth structure will be covered with a crown to strengthen it so you can chew on it comfortably. The crown will blend in seamlessly with your other teeth.

Dr. Mapes’s root canal patients usually have little or no pain after the procedure; in fact, most people report feeling much better than before they came in for their treatment.
