Composite Fillings

When you laugh, talk or smile, are you embarrassed due to silver fillings that were used to repair your teeth? Amalgam fillings have been used for decades to replace tooth material when cavities are removed or other dental work is done. While they are durable, they are also inflexible and unattractive, which is why many people prefer the natural look of composite fillings. As part of our cosmetic dentistry treatments at Court Square Dentistry, we offer composite fillings that can be color matched to your teeth for dental repairs or to replace those old metal fillings from years ago.

Are composite fillings new? Not really, but they have been improved to be more durable than they were when they first were used for dental repairs. New technology has created composite fillings that can withstand more pressure, even on those back molars where amalgam fillings were almost always used in the past. The material used in composite fillings is more flexible, putting less strain on the tooth than traditional metal fillings. And to top it off, they are almost invisible to the eye, blending in perfectly with your natural teeth.

What is a Composite Resin?

Tooth-colored fillings are made with composite resin that is a combination of plastic and glass materials. When mixed together in the right formula, this soft material can be applied in layers to a tooth and hardened. A special light is used to quickly harden each layer of composite resin, filling the area missing in the tooth. As each layer is added, the filling becomes stronger, while still remaining slightly flexible when pressure is applied.

Most people prefer composite fillings for cosmetic reasons. Old metal fillings can be carefully removed and replaced with this more aesthetically-pleasing option. Another reason our patients have metal fillings removed is due to the possible damage they can inflict on their teeth. Composite fillings are gentler on the remaining tooth, without the rigidity of metal.

Whether you need a new cavity filled or want old metal fillings removed, we can provide you with beautiful, white composite fillings at Court Square Dentistry. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.
